Towards Gender Equality in Vietnam
Under the cooperative framework between the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the European Union (EU), in 2018 the General Office of Population and Family Planning (GOPFP) with technical assistance from the EU Health Facility (EU-HF) has developed a draft manual guiding the implementation of extra-curriculum activities that aim at reducing imbalanced sex ratio at birth, raising awareness of gender and promoting gender equity among school children. With EU funding support through the Health Sector Policy Support Programme, a consultation workshop that brings together gender specialists, officials, and teachers to discuss the manual contents and get inputs was organized today in Da Lat city in Lam Dong province with participation of around 150 experts from the central and local levels.
The experience of Vietnam illustrates how growth and economic developments are not suficient factor to attain gender equality. Education plays a key role and integration of controlling imbalanced sex-ratio at birth, gender and ender equity in secondary schools' extra-curricula for school children therefore proves to be critical.
EU has been involved in supporting the imbalanced sex ratio at birth controlling measures in Vietnam and providing substantial financial assistance to the health sector in Vietnam through the Health Sector Policy Support Programme since 2011.
